EarthCube Council of Data Facilities Elects New Executive Committee
The National Science Foundation funded EarthCube community recently elected a new Council of Data Facilities (CDF) Executive Committee. The two-year-term began in July and will end in July 2022. The CDF named Kerstin Lehnert, a Doherty senior research scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and director of the Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance, and Corinna Gries, distinguished scientist at the University of Wisconsin and principal investigator for the Environmental Data Initiative, as the new co-chairs with Jerry Carter, Robert Downs, and Steve Diggs named as at-large members.
While Lehnert has been assigned to lead the general assembly meetings, Gries has been appointed as the representative to the EarthCube Leadership Council.
Newly elected CDF Executive Committee members-at-large were named as well: Jerry Carter of Incorporated Institutions for Seismology, Robert Downs of the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, and Steve Diggs of the Clivar and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.
The CDF is a federation of existing and emerging geoscience data facilities that serve as a foundation for EarthCube and related aspects of the cyberinfrastructure for earth system science.
EarthCube is a community-driven activity sponsored by the National Science Foundation to transform research in the academic geosciences community. EarthCube aims to create a well-connected environment to share data and knowledge in an open, transparent, and inclusive manner, thus accelerating our ability to better understand and predict the Earth’s systems. EarthCube membership is free and open to anyone in the Geosciences, as well as those building platforms to serve the Earth Sciences. The EarthCube Office is led by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) on the UC San Diego campus.
